The Importance of Physical Fitness

October 26th, 2010

In its most general meaning, physical fitness is a general state of good physical health. Obtaining and maintaining physical fitness is a result of physical activity, proper diet and nutrition and of course proper rest for physical recovery. In its simplest terms, physical fitness is to the human body what fine-tuning is to an engine. It enables people to perform up to their potential. Regardless of age, fitness can be described as a condition that helps individuals look, feel and do their best. Thus, physical fitness trainers, describe it as the ability to perform daily tasks vigorously and alertly, with left over energy to enjoy leisure-time activities and meet emergency demands. Specifically true for senior citizens, physical fitness is the ability to endure, bear up, withstand stress and carry on in circumstances where an unfit person could not continue.

In order for one to be considered physically fit, the heart, lungs, and muscles have to perform at a certain level for the individual to continue feeling capable of performing an activity. At the same time, since what humans do with their bodies directly affects the state of mind, fitness influences to some degree qualities such as mental alertness and emotional expression.

Physical fitness is often divided into the following categories in order for people to be able examine its components or parts. Particularly, physical fitness is judged by:

1. Cardiovascular endurance: This is the ability of the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues and to remove wastes over sustained periods of time.

2. Muscular strength & endurance: Strength deals with the ability of the muscle to exert force for a brief time period, while endurance is the ability of a muscle, or group of muscles, to sustain repeated contractions or to continue to apply force against an inert object.

3. Flexibility: This denotes the ability to move joints and use muscles through their full range of motion.

4. Body composition: Considered as one of the components of fitness, composition refers to the body in terms of lean mass (muscle, bone, vital tissue, and organs) and fat mass. Actually, the optimal ratio of fat to lean mass is an indication of fitness. Performing the right set of exercises can help people get rid off body fat and increase or maintain muscle mass.

Cardio Fitness

October 24th, 2010

Cardio is important for both weight loss and good cardiovascular health. Some body builders forget the importance of cardio, because they don’t want to lose muscle mass as a result. Unless you are an ectomorph, part of your exercise regime should focus on aerobics. Contrary to what some people believe, cardio will not reduce you’re muscle mass, and it will help you build up endurance and gain more definition.

Below is a list of reasons why you should keep up to date with your cardio workouts.

Prevention of disease, such as obesity and heart attack

Good mental health (studies show that people who exercise more are less likely to be depressed)

Shed off that layer of unwanted fat to show off the body you worked so hard for

Lowers blood pressure and resting heart rate

Increases blood flow to your muscles, which results in more nutrients being delivered to them

Increases endurance, which might help you lift heavier for longer time periods

When you are doing cardio, there are a few things that you should remember, they are duration, intensity and frequency.

Duration

Duration is how long you do a continuous aerobic activity in one session. Ideally, you should be training between 20 and 60 minutes per session. However, if you are a beginner, you may start by doing shorter workouts, of about 10 minutes at a time. Once you become stronger and more comfortable, you should start to increase how long you are exercising for. You should NEVER strain yourself, especially if you are a beginner. If you feel weak or dizzy, slow down or stop, and of course, consult a physician if you have any health problems before you begin. Note that although cardio will not promote muscle loss, if you’re goal is to add mass you should be doing only about 20-30 minutes a time or else you will burn too many calories.

Sample workout for a beginner

2 minutes warm up (ex. light walking)

6 minutes higher intensity activity (ex. brisk walking, light jog etc)

2 minutes cool down (ex. light walking or stretching)

Sample workout for intermediate

5 minutes warm up

20-35 minutes high intensity cardio

5 minutes cool down

Sample workout for advanced

10 mins warm up

40 mins high intensity cardio

10 mins cool down

Cardio fitness Continued

Intensity means how hard you are working during your activities. This is a key component for optimal health and fat loss. Beginners should aim for a target heart rate of lower that 55% of their maximum heart rates, while intermediate and advanced people should aim for about 65-90%. Your maximum heart rate level is approximately 220 minus your age, but of course this may vary depending on your fitness level. Gym equipment usually has hand censors that will tell you what your heart rate is at, so that you can maintain a good level of intensity throughout your workout. If you find these censors annoying to hold or you are outside, and easy way to see how hard you are working is to see how well you can talk.

If you can sing without difficulty, you aren’t working hard enough

If you can talk without much difficulty, you aren’t working very hard

If you can talk with a little difficulty, you are working at an average

If you can’t talk at all, you might be working too hard

Take a look at these guidelines, and judge for yourself what a good pace is for you.

Frequency

Unless you are an ectomorph, you should be generally performing cardio 3-5 times per week, unless you have a lot of fat to loose you can go for 5-7 times per week. You should never space you’re cardio fitness sessions out for more than 48 hours because your body start to loose the positive effects of the previous workout.

Interval Training

Interval training is a cardio workout that will take less time than a regular cardio workout and burn more calories. This type of workout is very effective and you will only need to do it for 15 - 20 minutes at a time. An example of interval training is to run for 3 minutes and walk briskly for 2 minutes. You continue this cycle until your workout is complete (don’t forget to warm up!). This type of workout is great for preventing the boredom that can come with steady state cardio and boosts fat lose. Interval training is also good for improving you’re cardiovascular abilities and preventing the muscle loss that can come with regular cardio. Remember that you should always be changing the duration of how long you are running and walking to keep your body guessing. This type of cardio can be done on virtually any cardio machine, and also outdoors.

Interval training vs. steady state cardio

Interval training - Pro’s

burns a lot of fat

takes less time

burns less muscle tissue

Steady state cardio - Pro’s

Improves endurance

Little impact on joints

It is not as easy to “burn out” - so you will end up burning more calories

An ideal workout routine will consist of both of these types of cardio, as they both have their own benefits. I would recommend doing interval training one day and steady state the next.

Sample week of cardio workouts

Monday

Steady state cardio 40 minutes stationary bike

Tuesday

Interval training 20 minutes treadmill

Wednesday

Rest

Thursday

Steady state cardio 30 minutes swimming

Friday

Interval training 20 minutes ecliptical trainer

Saturday

Rest

Sunday

Steady state cardio 60 minutes rollerblading

This is just an example to show you how you can vary your workouts. Remember to keep them fun and change them up weekly so that your body never gets used to a certain workout, and you don’t get bored!

Cardiorespiratory Fitness Fitness Inside and Out!

October 7th, 2010

Cardiorespiratory fitness on the other hand is a condition by which the muscles of the body performs its work by circulating blood reaching the heart and thus supplements sufficient amount of oxygen through normalized breathing. It is also known as CR endurance or aerobic fitness.

This condition is required to sustain the regular utilization of large groups of muscles. It is also needed at elevated levels to allow constant and uninterrupted bodily functions. High levels would also permit a fast recovery from fatigue.

What is the Importance of Cardiorespiratory fitness?

CR fitness is said to be responsible for the prolonged use of large muscles of the body. It is expected to be at its peak, but it would depend on the state and ability of the cardiovascular, respiratory systems and the muscles as well.

It is very essential such that it is the determining factor by which a body can be considered healthy or not. It also determines the lifespan of a person suffering from certain heart disease. If it can be heightened at some particular level, the risks of dying from cardiovascular disease will be reduced.

Boost your level of cardiorespiratory fitness by engaging in specific exercises. There are three tests by which CR fitness is known; these are: One-mile walk assessment, Treadmill test, and the three-minute step assessment. Take your pick and proceed with a healthy fitness program.

How to Improve Cardiorespiratory Fitness?

Home Fitness Exercise Equipment - Shifting the Weight With Weights

September 26th, 2010

A vast array of home fitness exercise equipment is at your disposal, clamoring for the number one spot as far as benefits to you are concerned.

You need to be a wide-awake consumer. Let common sense be your guide. There is no easy, overnight road to fitness. Svelte and sweating unfortunately go hand in hand!

However, by choosing home fitness exercise equipment that works for you, losing the extra pounds and gaining toned muscle-power, can be fun and enjoyable. An added benefit is the self-confidence boost it generates.

When choosing home fitness exercise equipment, you need to concentrate on the three s-areas: strength training for muscle toning, stretching for flexibility, and sprinting or a related activity for cardiovascular fitness.

To give your heart a good workout, an upright or recumbent cycle, treadmill, stepper, or an elliptical cross-trainer is ideal. Quality home fitness exercise equipment often feature a heart rate monitor, to enable you to be as effective as possible in your exercise routine. Distance travelled, and calories burned may also be measured to give you a complete picture of your progress.

Do you enjoy running or walking, but are often tempted to use the weather, the neighbour’s dog, potholes, or any of a dozen other factors as absolutely valid reasons to skip your run? Trim the number of ready-made excuses by about 95% by including a treadmill in your home fitness exercise equipment arsenal!

Good rubber or polymer cushions under the deck offers cushioning for your feet and knees - a comfort you will not easily find on hard road surfaces! Make sure that the treadmill features the right kind of incline running for you. To ensure durability and safety, always buy from a reputable company that offers good backing - this applies to any home fitness exercise equipment.

An upright or recumbent cycle is a good option if you are looking for low-impact cardiovascular home fitness exercise equipment. This is also the recommendation for someone with a knee-injury. A recumbent model may be more suitable if you are experiencing lower back problems.

An elliptical cross-trainer is the all-in-one version of the treadmill, stepper, and cycle. As far as low-impact exercise goes, this is one of the best options. Electronic adjustable resistance ensures non-stop exercising. You want to monitor your progress, so look for indicators of speed, time, distance, pulse rate, and calories burned in any home fitness exercise equipment.

Strength training is extremely important. The human body loses muscle mass with age. To retain mobility and strength, it is vital to work on this aspect. By using home fitness exercise equipment to increase muscle mass, metabolism is also increased. A revved-up metabolism makes it easier to shake off those stubborn extra pounds, or helps to prevent weight gain.

Strength training doesn’t have to be expensive. Free weights are easy to use, and resistance bands are inexpensive, but very effective. By adding an exercise ball to the equation, you improve your balance as well.

If you can afford it, a gym system will give your home fitness exercise equipment all the advantages of going to a health center, without the inconvenience. Some of these even allow multiple users to be active at the same time.

Weider offers quality home fitness exercise equipment with the promise of trouble-free use for many years. The Advantage gym system or the superb Max has everything you need for a complete workout in the comfort of your home.

You will be whipped into shape with 65 club-quality exercises. The variety will keep you entertained and motivated, and the eye-pleasing results will soon have you strutting your stuff on the beach! The systems include a lat tower, leg developer, and rowing seat. Women can use these home fitness exercise equipment systems with confidence, knowing that they will develop the lean, toned look they desire.

Stretching is important before and after every workout. It is vital to prevent injuries. Flexibility encourages good posture, and in the process prevents or improves back problems.

People often assume that aging equals joint and muscle stiffness. This doesn’t have to be the case! Home fitness exercise equipment helps you to maintain good health, and maximizes vitality and mobility. Most often stiffness is the result of disuse. Yoga bands or fitness bands, and a good stretching program will keep you supple, irrespective of your age.

Well-known companies such as Reebok offer a variety of other tools and props to help you to gain the most from your home fitness exercise equipment. An exercise ball strengthens the core muscles, improves balance, and increases the effectiveness of many exercises.

An old-fashioned jump rope is still a great piece of equipment. Use smaller wrist and ankle weights to improve the effectiveness of any activity. A wireless heart rate monitor is useful if your home fitness exercise equipment doesn’t include this.

If you go away on a business trip, or on holiday, you don’t have to disrupt your exercise program or hunt around for a gym. An inexpensive option is portable home fitness exercise equipment. These gym kits usually include resistance tubes, handles, ankle straps, a door attachment, jump rope, hand grip and a handy tote bag.

Using home fitness exercise equipment can be a fun-filled family experience. Your example also helps to instill good habits in your children, which translates into an immeasurable investment in their future well-being.

The Life Fitness X1 Elliptical Cross - Trainer With Advanced Workout Console Review

September 20th, 2010

My philosophy when reviewing different household gym solutions is that when you make an investment in a unit to work out on at your house, you want a complete solution. This is why a unit like the Life fitness X1 Elliptical Cross-Trainer with Advanced Workout Console fits the tightest of criteria. This is the type of elliptical that can satisfy almost every desire for household gym you and your family may have.

A Acknowledged First-rate Elliptical - The thought of health club owners and personal trainers means a great deal to me because they acknowledge a sound home machine from something that does not meet their criteria. Resoundingly, the Life fitness X1 Elliptical Cross-Trainer with Advanced Workout Console is established by experts as a quality unit that has the potency of dominating this market.

The Patented Link6 Drive System - One trouble individuals notice when using an elliptical machine is that the movement is often uncomfortable and rough. That is why the Link6 drive system that is at the center of the Life fitness X1 Elliptical Cross-Trainer with Advanced Workout Console is superior. The stride you will get on this elliptical will feel like walking and it will offer you a low impact workout that grants you a serious cardio workout without putting your knees, feet or joints in peril.

An Elliptical You Will Return to - There is a lot of engineering science that went into the Life fitness X1 Elliptical Cross-Trainer with Advanced Workout Console to assure you will keep active in your exercise program for a long time. The advanced workout console lives up to its name by offering a great deal of support in the form of training for specific muscles and state-of-the-art monitoring of your heart rate every instant you are on the machine. It even permits each member of the house to preserve their profile so that it is set to go when you have the time for a exercise on this unit.

The Life Fitness X1 Elliptical Cross-Trainer with Advanced Workout Console Review - Negative Facets

The advanced quality that is pronounced in the design of the Life Fitness X1 Elliptical Cross-Trainer with Advanced Workout Console is shown in every facet of the means the elliptical does in the household gym setting. Small wonder why user reviews have been exceedingly positive.

But quality like this comes at a high price. The stiffer cost of the Life Fitness X1 Elliptical Cross-Trainer with Advanced Workout Console is plausibly the biggest drawback. But with some diligent and skillful shopping, you can buy your own cross-trainer with a price that is to a greater extent complimentary with your spending plans.

Fitness Ball - 3 Exercises To Make You Stronger

August 17th, 2010

Most fitness ball exercises are designed to reach your hard-to-target muscles, such as those on the lower back or your upper and lower abdominals, which ordinary aerobic exercise might fail to address.

If you combine fitness ball exercises with the proper diet and sleep routines, then you can lose weight easily without having to pay exorbitant gym joining fees. If you perform fitness ball exercises frequently, you can also increase your resistance and endurance, and even improve your balance.

Here are a few fitness ball exercises that you might want to engage in to start your routine.

1. Use the fitness ball to do push ups.

Place your toes or ankles on the ball, lay your hands upon the floor, and spread them so that they are at a greater distance than your shoulders are from each other.

Bend yourself down to the floor through your elbows, then bring yourself back up when your elbows reach a ninety-degree angle. If you have lower back pains, you may want to use your shins or knees to support you on the ball.

2. Use the fitness ball to do lunges.

Place the ball against a wall, then place one foot on it. Straighten this leg, and bend your other leg slightly. Push your body forward in a slow lunge toward the ball, but keep your back straight, and contract your abdominal muscles.

As you find your body bending forward, hold the position and count to ten. Bring yourself back to your original standing position, then shift to the other leg. Do this twelve to fifteen times, and breathe steadily.

3. Do fitness ball exercises with dumbbells.

Use an appropriate dumbbell weight and do not overstrain your arms with excessive weights. Hold one dumbbell in each hand, then lie down with your back on the ball. Keep your head straight and your feet on the floor, but with your knees bent. Raise the dumbbells up, then bring them down back to your chest.

Bring the dumbbells to the sides, then put them back upon your chest. Repeat this exercise twelve to fifteen times. You can also lie down on the ball, this time with your navel on the fitness ball’s apex. Stretch your arms by swinging the dumbbells outward and away from your body.

Conclusion

These are only a few fitness ball exercises that you can engage in. You can consult with your trainer or orthopedist on more exercises that you can add to your routine.

Just be sure to breathe steadily and avoid straining your back, and you can have your desired body and weight in no time.
